HIT is a member of HPH Trust, which is the
world’s first container port business trust listed in Singapore. It is also a
part of Hutchison Port Holidings Limited’s global network and therefore having
access to services and resources within the HPH Group.
HIT plays a key role in the development of
the port in Hong Kong, achieving smooth and efficient handling of container
cargoes by ensuring the port has required resources, facilities and people. It operates twelve berths at Terminals 4,6,7 and 9. HIT has continuously set industry benchmarks for productivity, efficiency and value-added services. It has one of the busiest container port which is located in the Kwai Tsing container port area of Hong Kong in the world.

Under keen competition with
China such as Shenzhen port, how can HIT sustain its competitive advantage and
to minimize the impact of this threat?
Answer: Although there
are more and more Free Trade Zone in China, under the increasing demand
situation of China, Hong Kong and cities from China can cooperate to gain even
larger interest. What is more, as an international financial hub, the status of
Hong Kong is still irreplaceable due to it soft service skills like maritime
insurance, maritime law, maritime mortgage, etc.

What are the information
systems and technology utilized in enhancing the security and efficiency of
large amount of goods being transported?
Answer: nGen is used to
achieve this. Before ocean-going vessels arrive, key information like container
numbers, weight, size and type - is sent to the system via Electronic Data
Interchange and Customer Plus. Using the system, ship Planners can find the
best loaction for loading and discharge operations. Berth Planners can arrange
the date and time of vessel berthing. Yard Planners can decide the most
suitable yard areas for grounding containers based on their weight class,
designated vesseland port of discharge.

your CSR policy to contribute back to the society?
Answer:
The CSR of HIT
can be divided into 4 parts which are Legal Compliance, Pollution Prevention,
Resources Conservation and Waste Minimization, Continual Monitoring and
Improvement and Sustainable Development.
Legal

HIT complis with
applicable environmental regulations and, set their own guidelines for
achieving a good environmental performance.

HIT considers
the environment impact when planning and making decisions. They would conduct
their operation in an environmental-friendly manner.

Monitoring and Improvement:
HIT conducts
periodic audits and self-assessment to check whether themselves are in compliance with the policy.

environmental objectives throughout the company and business related parties
for pursuing Sustainable Development

Would
HIT expand the capacity in order to compete with your competitors located in
Pearl River Delta?
Answer: It is quite
difficult for HIT to expand in term of space, but they can increase the
efficiency by upgrade the equipment and instrument. The upgraded nGen system,
Operations Monitoring System, RFID, etc can greatly improve the throughput of
the terminal. Rail Mounted Jib Cranes can also increase the handling capacity
of cargo compared with the traditional Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes.

What
is the contingency plan of HIT under extreme weather?
Answer: HIT keeps close
contact with the Observatory. When they are informed that extreme weather is
coming. The relative workers will use net to consolidate the empty cargos to
prevent them from falling down.
6.
HIT needs to handle huge amount of containers
shipment every day. How can you minimize the errors in order to provide
superior service level?
Answer: The digitalized
system and operation can largely reduce the human errors. Basically, workers in
the control centre can monitor everything within the terminal. In case of any
errors and accidences, they can response immediately.
7.
What
are the policies to prevent labor strike or to maintain good employer-employee
relationships?
Answer: HIT provides
resources to support the continuous learning of staff. Various staff
events and interest groups are organized to promote employees’ well-being and
make it a better place to work. Surprisingly, HIT even provides staff with
various supports that equip them to meet their life challenges by introducing
the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
